ISO 9001:2000 – Quality Management or QM basically describes all organized efforts aimed at improving products, processes or services of any kind. QM is a core task of executive management. In sectors such as aerospace and medical technology, healthcare, pharmaceuticals and food production, this quality management system is mandatory. ISO 14001 – Environmental Management The international ISO 14001 environmental management standard defines the universally recognized requirements placed on an environmental management system. It belongs to an entire family of standards that includes a large number of other standards covering various areas of environmental management, such as life cycle assessments, environmental key figures or the assessment of environmental performance. The standards can be applied to both manufacturing and service providing companies. ISO 19752 – Test Method used for Monochrome Toner Cartridges Since about 2004, several major OEM manufacturers such as Brother, Hewlett-Packard, Canon, Lexmark and Epson have been in support of a new international standard: ISO/IEC 19752 (“LSA Letter”). This test procedure assesses the printing performance / yield of printer cartridges in monochrome (b/w) laser printers. It is very demanding in terms of the quality of the consumables tested. Here is a summary of the ISO/IEC 19752 test criteria: a) Use of a standard page (“LSA Letter”), printed in a controlled environment using standard printer settings.b) A minimum of nine cartridges per cartridge type are tested until recognized as empty by the printer (“Toner Low” message) to assess the average printing performance / yield that can be expected.c) The cartridges and printers used are sourced from the open market, i.e. they have not been manufactured specifically for testing purposes.d) Printing quality measurements to establish an end-of-life criterion.e) A minimum of three cartridges are tested on three different printers each, in order that any effects of hardware differences can be ruled out.f) The printing environment is controlled to remain constant, as fluctuations in temperature and humidity can affect printing performance / yield.g) Since participation is international and industry-wide, the test criteria represent an objective standard. ISO 19798 – Test Method used for Color Toner Cartridges Procedure for marking (assessing) toner cartridge yield in color printers and multifunctional units which may include printer components. DIN 33870 – Requirements and Tests concerning Used Toner Cartridge Recycling DIN 33870 defines minimum requirements for rebuild and refill cartridges (recycled cartridges). It is worth mentioning in this regard that only very few recycling cartridge suppliers manufacture products in compliance with this standard. However, only recycled products in compliance with the standard can be compared objectively. As regards all other products, one has to rely on the suppliers’ statements. Here is a summary of the ISO/IEC 19752 test criteria STMC – Standardized Test Parameters for Toner Cartridges REACH – EU Regulation governing the Safe Handling of Chemicals REACH (in effect since June 2007) stands for Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals. REACH equally and directly applies to all EU member states. REACH fundamentally harmonizes and simplifies the European Chemicals Law.
